To comply with international maritime regulations all vessels are required to carry on board sufficient absorbent materials to mop up oil spills of 7 or 12 barrels dependent on length of vessel.
This oil spill kit has been designed with maritime vessels in mind and will absorb twelve barrels.
This spill kit serves as a primary component of a ship's oil contingency plan. Identifyable sources of leakage or spillage can be permanently protected, large spills or leaks prevented from running overboard and small to medium spillages contained and absorbed entirely from the vessel's own resources preventing environmental damage as well as ensuring safer working conditions for crew members. Suitable for long term on board storage.
Deployment situations:
- Spillages deck
- Patches of oil spilled on deck are contained by booms or socks joined together to surround the spillage and absorbed by pads or rolls.
- Scupper plug
- Socks or booms, joined together to form a continuous barrier, prevent the ingress of spilled oil. Cover scupper plugs with pads or cushions.
- Bunkering areas
- Pads, rolls or cushions protect spaces around manifolds from spillage or leaks while bunkering or discharging cargo. Booms can be joined together to create a continuous absorbent barrier sealing off the whole area.
- Spillage overboard
- In the event of a small spill overboard, if strung together and deployed around the vessel in dock or harbour, booms will prevent the oil from spreading and allow time for removal of spill.
- Machinery
- Socks joined together create complete leak and spillage proof areas around pumps, compressors, generators, fuel/lube oil purifiers, absorbing oils and allowing any water to pass through to the bilges unpolluted. Pads or rolls cut to size placed beneath glands, taps, hose unions etc absorb leaks and drips at source. Pads can also be used as oil absorbent wipes for swabbing down.
- Piston cooling cascade tanks, hot wells etc
- Cushions or pads placed in position on a permanent basis continuously absorb surface oil and are simply replaced when saturated. Cushions are fitted with mooring eye to take a retreival rope.
- Walkways and machinery spaces
- Rolls cut to size protect large surface areas from contamination by oily spray or foot traffic especially necessary to prevent residual oil from spreading when the vessel is dry docking.
- Bilges
- Cushions or pads placed in bilges and left in position to collect spilled oil and replaced periodically ensure that only clean oil free water flows over the side (keep clear of strum boxes).
- Steering compartments
- Pads or socks around machinery will collect all surplus hydraulic/lubricating oils.
- Other uses
- Pads or rolls absorb patches or oil spilled on quaysides, slipways, steps etc. For workboats, tugs and harbour service craft mini mushions can be used in place of the larger version. Socks and cushions are used in confined spaces, engine trays, small drain outlets etc.
